One of the most common complaints we hear
from our candidates about the search process is the way they are treated
by "headhunters." Many candidates feel they are viewed as nothing
more than a dollar sign or as a means to an end. They complain that their
phone calls aren't returned or they are returned by someones untrained
assistant or a recruiter they have never spoken with before.
Adversely, one of the most consistent compliments we get at Berger and
Leff is how professionally and compassionately we treat our candidates.
We have never been able to understand why the one basic concept we do
business by is so often times overlooked: treat others as you wish to
be treated yourself. We understand how exciting the prospect of a new
business opportunity can be and we also understand how emotional and stressful
it can be.
It is true that our clients pay our bills, but it is also true that without
top quality candidates we wouldn't have the top quality clients that we
currently represent. Here's how our services work and why.
Upon contacting Berger and Leff we usually conduct a brief phone screening
and then request background information to ensure we can be of assistance.
Assuming a candidate has the background and type of experience we are
looking for, we schedule a face to face interview. The purpose of this
interview is twofold: first to determine whether the candidate is of the
caliber and technical proficiency we choose to represent and secondly,
to introduce ourselves and begin to develop the relationship between recruiter
and candidate. In many cases and whenever appropriate, we prefer to represent
candidates on an exclusive basis.
Obviously, confidentiality is of the utmost importance, and our sensitivity
to this issue is one of the reasons we get a high number of referrals.
Depending on what type of opportunity the candidate is looking for, industry
or public accounting, after the technical screening we will discuss the
different searches we are working on that may be of interest.
Although we do not contact references without permission, the tax community
is small and we are well connected. We do, however, require references
before we will present a candidate to one of our client companies. Because
of the extra care we take with the search process many of our clients
are former candidates themselves.
